Apple Device Support · chapter 3 of 12
Week 3: iCloud and the Continuity club
In this chapter Objectives 2.3, 2.4
Objective 2.3
iCloud features and services
What iCloud does
iCloud stores and syncs data for an Apple Account across devices and the web (iCloud.com). Every account gets 5 GB free; more space comes with an iCloud+ plan, which can be shared with Family Sharing. Users choose apps in Settings > [name] > iCloud on iPhone and iPad, or System Settings > [name] > iCloud on Mac.
- iCloud Drive: files and folders, Desktop & Documents sync on Mac
- iCloud Photos: the full library on every device, with Optimize Storage
- Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Messages in iCloud
- Passwords and Keychain: passwords and passkeys, end-to-end encrypted
- iCloud Backup for iPhone and iPad; Find My for devices
Rosa: So iCloud is why my shopping list shows up on my iPad too?
Maya: Exactly. Reminders, synced through iCloud.
iCloud+ and Advanced Data Protection
iCloud+ adds more storage plus privacy features: iCloud Private Relay (hides IP address and Safari browsing from networks and sites), Hide My Email (random forwarding addresses), custom email domains and HomeKit Secure Video. Advanced Data Protection is an opt-in setting that end-to-end encrypts most iCloud data, including backups, Photos and Notes; the user must set up a recovery contact or recovery key because Apple can't help recover that data.
Exam tip Some data is always end-to-end encrypted (Passwords and Keychain, Health). Advanced Data Protection extends it to more categories.
Storage full? Know where it goes
When iCloud is full, backups stop and Photos and Drive stop syncing. Check Settings > [name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage (wording varies by version) to see what uses space: backups, Photos, Drive, Messages. Fix by deleting old device backups or big files, or upgrade to iCloud+.
Priya: Half of "iCloud is broken" tickets are "iCloud is full".
Check yourself 1A front-office user wants to sign up for a newsletter without giving out her real email address. Which iCloud+ feature helps?
- iCloud Private Relay
- Hide My Email
- Advanced Data Protection
- iCloud Keychain
Show the answer
Answer: B. Hide My Email
Hide My Email creates unique random addresses that forward to the user's real inbox and can be turned off at any time.
Objective 2.4
Continuity features and their requirements
The Continuity features
Continuity lets nearby Apple devices work together.
- Handoff: start in an app on one device, continue on another
- Universal Clipboard: copy on iPhone, paste on Mac
- AirDrop: send files to nearby devices
- Continuity Camera: iPhone as a Mac webcam; scan or photo into a document
- Sidecar (iPad as a second display) and Universal Control (one keyboard and mouse across Mac and iPad)
- iPhone calls and SMS/MMS on Mac and iPad; Instant Hotspot; iPhone Mirroring
- Auto Unlock and Approve with Apple Watch
The requirements most features share
Most Continuity features need: the same Apple Account signed in on each device (as the main account), Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on, devices near each other (Bluetooth range, roughly 10 m / 33 ft), Handoff turned on, and models and OS versions that support the feature. Calls on Mac also need both devices on the same Wi-Fi network.
- iPhone/iPad: Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (older: AirPlay & Handoff)
- Mac: System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff
- SMS on Mac: iPhone Messages settings > Text Message Forwarding
- Calls on Mac: iPhone Phone settings > Calls on Other Devices
Exam tip AirDrop is the exception: it works between different Apple Accounts. Handoff and Universal Clipboard need the same one.
Things that block Continuity
MDM can turn off Handoff and other Continuity features on managed devices. Some features have regional or hardware limits; for example iPhone Mirroring needs a Mac with Apple silicon or a T2 chip and isn't offered in every region. When one feature fails, check account, radios, distance, settings and restrictions, in that order.
Maya: Same account, radios on, close together, Handoff on. Say it with me.
Exam tip Version caution: feature lists and setting names shift each year. Check the requirements page for the current release.
Check yourself 2Universal Clipboard works between Maya's Mac and iPad, but not her iPhone. All three use her Apple Account and Bluetooth is on. What's the most likely issue?
- The iPhone needs iCloud Drive turned on
- The Mac needs AirDrop set to Everyone
- Wi-Fi is turned off on the iPhone
- The iPhone must use the Mac's Personal Hotspot
Show the answer
Answer: C. Wi-Fi is turned off on the iPhone
Universal Clipboard and Handoff need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on, plus the same Apple Account and Handoff enabled. A phone on cellular only with Wi-Fi switched off fails.
Practice questions
Answer in your head, then open the answer. Ranger's Device Doctor has 538 questions like these for Apple Device Support, with mock exams.
Question 1A new Kibble & Co. intern creates a personal Apple Account. How much iCloud storage does it include for free?
- 2 GB
- 5 GB
- 50 GB
- 200 GB
Show the answer
Answer: B. 5 GB
Every Apple Account comes with 5 GB of free iCloud storage; more storage needs an iCloud+ plan.
Question 2A user wants to sign up for websites with a random address that forwards to her personal inbox. Which iCloud+ feature does this?
- Hide My Email
- Private Relay
- Advanced Data Protection
- iCloud Keychain
Show the answer
Answer: A. Hide My Email
Hide My Email creates unique random addresses that forward to the user's inbox; it is an iCloud+ feature. Private Relay hides browsing in Safari, not email addresses.
Question 3Rosa deleted 400 photos on her iPad to free up space. They also disappeared from her iPhone. Both devices use iCloud Photos. Why?
- Her iPad restored an old iCloud backup to the iPhone
- iCloud Photos syncs deletions to every device using it
- Optimize Storage deletes photos from the iPhone
- Her iPhone was set to Download and Keep Originals
Show the answer
Answer: B. iCloud Photos syncs deletions to every device using it
iCloud Photos keeps the same library on every device, so adding or deleting on one device changes all of them. It is a sync service, not a backup. Deleted photos can usually be recovered from Recently Deleted for a limited time.
Question 4A user wants to choose which apps sync with iCloud on a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26. Where does he go?
- System Settings > General > Storage
- System Settings > Internet Accounts
- System Settings > [his name] > iCloud
- System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders
Show the answer
Answer: C. System Settings > [his name] > iCloud
On Mac, iCloud features are managed in System Settings by clicking the account name at the top of the sidebar, then iCloud. On iPhone and iPad the path is Settings > [Apple Account] > iCloud.
Question 5A user saves Wi-Fi passwords, website passwords and passkeys on an iPhone and wants them on a Mac too. Which iCloud feature syncs them, and what does it require?
- iCloud Drive; it requires iCloud+
- iCloud Backup; it requires a recent backup to a Mac
- iCloud Keychain, with two-factor authentication
- Family Sharing; it requires an organizer
Show the answer
Answer: C. iCloud Keychain, with two-factor authentication
iCloud Keychain syncs passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi and card details end to end encrypted across devices on the same Apple Account, and it requires two-factor authentication.
