Free division practice, from facts to long division

Division facts are the times tables backwards: 42 ÷ 6 asks what times 6 makes 42. Ranger's Math Trail practices those first, then long division with bigger numbers, and then long division with remainders.

For long division, Show me how goes one digit at a time: bring down, divide, write what's left over. Every answer ends with a check, multiplying back to the number you started with.

How to do it

  1. For a fact, think of the times table: 56 ÷ 7 asks 7 × ? = 56. The answer is 8.
  2. For long division, work from the left. How many times does the divisor fit into the first digit, or the first two?
  3. Write that digit in the answer, multiply, subtract, and bring down the next digit.
  4. Whatever is left at the end is the remainder, written like 23 R 4.

Worked examples

Example 160 ÷ 6 = ?

  1. 60 ÷ 6 asks: how many groups of 6 make 60?
  2. Think of the times fact: 6 × ? = 60.
  3. 6 × 10 = 60, so 60 ÷ 6 = 10.

  2. Bring down 6: 26 ÷ 6 = 4 remainder 2.
  3. Bring down 2: 22 ÷ 6 = 3 remainder 4.
  4. Answer: 43 R 4 (43 with 4 left over). Check: 6 × 43 + 4 = 262. ✔
