Free negative numbers (integers) practice

The Ice Pond world in Ranger's Math Trail covers negative numbers: adding and subtracting them with a number line, then multiplying and dividing with the sign rules.

Every adding and subtracting answer shows the hop on a number line, so you can see why −3 + 5 lands on 2.

How to do it

  1. Adding a positive number moves right on the number line. Adding a negative number moves left.
  2. Subtracting is adding the opposite: 4 − (−6) = 4 + 6 = 10.
  3. Multiplying or dividing: work out the size first, then the sign.
  4. Same signs give a positive answer. Different signs give a negative answer.

Worked examples

Example 15 − (−10) = ?

  1. Subtracting is adding the opposite: 5 − (−10) = 5 + 10.
  2. Start at 5 on the number line.
  3. Adding 10 moves 10 to the RIGHT.
  4. You land on 15.

Answer: 15
