Free fractions practice, with every step shown
The Treat Bakery world in Ranger's Math Trail is all fractions: simplifying to lowest terms, adding and subtracting with the same and different denominators, mixed numbers, a fraction of a number, and multiplying and dividing fractions.
Type answers like 3/4 on the number pad. In the simplify stops, a right amount that isn't in lowest terms gets a nudge to simplify instead of a miss; everywhere else, any equal answer counts. Show me how walks through common denominators, keep-change-flip and the final simplify.

How to do it
- Simplify: divide the top and bottom by their greatest common factor. 6/8 ÷ 2 on top and bottom = 3/4.
- Add or subtract: make the denominators the same first, then add or subtract the tops and keep the bottom.
- Multiply: top times top, bottom times bottom, then simplify.
- Divide: keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, flip the second fraction, then multiply.
Worked examples
Example 11/2 − 1/6 = ?
- The bottoms are different (2 and 6). Find a common denominator: the smallest number both go into is 6.
- Rewrite: 1/2 = 3/6 (×3 top and bottom) and 1/6 = 1/6 (×1).
- Subtract the tops: 3 − 1 = 2, over 6.
- Simplify if you can: the answer is 1/3.
Answer: 1/3
Try one like it →Example 21/3 ÷ 1/9 = ?
- Dividing by a fraction = multiplying by its flip (reciprocal). Keep, change, flip:
- 1/3 ÷ 1/9 = 1/3 × 9.
- Multiply tops: 1 × 9 = 9. Multiply bottoms: 3 × 1 = 3.
- Simplify: 9/3 = 3.
Answer: 3
Try one like it →Mistakes to watch for
- Never add the bottoms. 1/2 + 1/3 is not 2/5; it's 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
- Use the smallest common denominator to keep the numbers small.
- Simplify at the end, and check whether an improper fraction should be a mixed number.

Questions
How do I type a fraction or a mixed number?
Type 3/4 with the / key. For a mixed number, the fractions world has a space key: 1 1/2. Decimals like 0.75 are accepted where they're equal.
What age are fractions for?
Simple fractions start around age 9 (grade 3 or 4). Unlike denominators, mixed numbers and dividing fractions come at ages 10 to 12.
