Free place value and rounding practice

Place value is what a digit is worth because of where it sits: the 4 in 4,312 is worth 4,000. Rounding uses place value to make a number simpler, like 4,312 to the nearest hundred is 4,300.

In the Number Barn world, Ranger's Math Trail asks both kinds of question, with numbers up to the ten thousands. Rounding answers come with a number line showing which way the number goes.

How to do it

  1. Read the places from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands.
  2. A digit's value is the digit times its place: the 7 in 3,782 is 7 × 100 = 700.
  3. To round, find the place you're rounding to, then look at the digit just to its right.
  4. 5 or more rounds up. 4 or less rounds down. Everything after the rounding place becomes 0.
