Free practice solving equations for x

Solving an equation means finding the number x stands for. Ranger's Math Trail builds up from one-step equations (x + 7 = 12) to two-step equations (3x − 4 = 11), then variables on both sides and equations with parentheses.

Each answer shows every move done to both sides, and ends by putting the answer back into the equation to check it.

Pick a level

Free, no sign-up. The game asks your age once, then every answer comes with a hint and a step-by-step Show me how.

How to do it

  1. Get x alone by undoing what's done to it, doing the same thing to both sides.
  2. Undo adding and subtracting first, then multiplying and dividing.
  3. With x on both sides, move the x terms to one side and the numbers to the other.
  4. With parentheses, distribute first: 3(x + 2) = 3x + 6.

Worked examples

Example 1Solve: 8x − 9 = 63

  1. Add 9 on both sides: 8x = 63 + 9 = 72.
  2. Divide both sides by 8: x = 72 ÷ 8 = 9.
  3. Check: 8 × 9 − 9 = 63. ✔

Answer: x = 9

Example 2Solve: 2x + 6 = −4x − 36

  1. Get the x terms on one side: add 4x to both sides: 6x + 6 = −36.
  2. Get the numbers on the other side: 6x = −36 − 6 = −42.
  3. Divide both sides by 6: x = −7.
  4. Check: left side −8, right side −8. Same! ✔

Answer: x = −7

Questions

Do I type x = 5 or just 5?

Either works. The game reads x = 5 and 5 the same way.

What age is it for?

One-step equations come in around grade 6 (age 11), two-step around grade 7, and variables on both sides in grade 8 and Algebra 1.
