Free percents and ratios practice

The Pet Shop world in Ranger's Math Trail is everyday math: percent of a number, sale prices after a discount, what percent one number is of another, ratios, unit rates and solving proportions.

The word problems use pet-shop prices in dollars and cents, and every answer shows the shortcut as well as the long way.

How to do it

  1. Percent means out of 100: 25% of 80 = 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20.
  2. Sale price: find the discount, then take it off. Or multiply by the percent you still pay.
  3. Part ÷ whole × 100 tells you what percent the part is.
  4. For rates, find the cost of one first (the unit rate). For a proportion like 3/4 = x/20, cross-multiply.

Worked examples

Example 1A leash costs $48.00. It is 30% off. What is the sale price?

  1. Find the discount: 30% of $48.00 = $48.00 × 30 ÷ 100 = $14.40.
  2. Subtract it: $48.00 − $14.40 = $33.60.
  3. Shortcut: you pay 70%, and 70% of $48.00 = $33.60.

Example 2Solve the proportion: 7/2 = 42/x

  1. Cross-multiply: 7x = 2 × 42 = 84.
  2. Divide both sides by 7: x = 84 ÷ 7 = 12.
  3. Check: 7/2 and 42/12 are the same amount (×6 top and bottom). ✔
